Red Swamp Banksia
Banksia occidentalis
A shrub or small tree to 25' tall, with smooth, grey-brown bark, and linear foliage that is very narrow and up to 6" long. The brilliantly colored flower heads are golden with metallic red styles, and are very showy in contrast to the foliage. Generally blooms in summer, with a few blooms in winter and spring.
Naturally growing in sand or peaty sand, usually near swamp margins, this fast-growing shrub makes a very nice addition to the garden, especially where there are wet areas where other varieties may not thrive.
Grow in full sun in light or somewhat heavy soil, with year-around moisture. Relatively frost hardy. Zones 9-10 (8 with some protection while young).
We ship vigorous, young plants in 2" x 10" tube pots.
