A herbaceous clematis which is very hardy and non-climbing, growing to 3 1/2-feet tall with an equal spread. The 1-inch flowers are lilac-blue with lighter highlights and are borne in clusters at the upper leaf axils. Each flower is narrow and tube-like with the tepals recurved or curled back at the tips. The blooms are sweetly scented and appear late in the summer, turning into fluffy seedheads which add further interest and charm to this delightful species. Deciduous in the winter - cut back severely in the fall. Clematis heracleifolia is an underappreciated species and deserves to be more widely grown - this is a very nice form! Hardy zones 4-9.
