Monkey Flower Vine - Climbing Snapdragon

(Syn: Maurandia barclayana) A wonderful vine with felted, serrated, heart-shaped foliage which covers itself with 2-inch, hot-pink trumpet flowers, from spring until frost. Grows to 10-feet in part shade. Easy and fast growing. Good in pots. Provide support for climbing. HP

(Twining Snapdragon) A delightful and cheery addition to the garden! With attractive arrow-head foliage, the self-twining vines are awash with colorful, intense violet snapdragon flowers all summer & until the first hard frost. Easy in sun to part shade, in rich, well-drained yet moist soil. Grows 5’- 8’. Provide support for vines to climb. Excellent in hanging baskets.

THERE'S EVEN A SONG ABOUT IT!

Known as "Balm of Gilead", this Canary Island native gives off a very sweet, spicy citrus and eucalyptus fragrance, (kind of like a pleasant smelling vapo-rub), and is used medicinally and for making tea - the entire plant is fragrant - the leaves, the flowers and even the seeds! A lovely 3'-4' plant of light green, tri-foliate leaves and spikes of small, purple and white flowers in spring and summer. Grow in full sun in well-drained soil. Hardy zones 9-10. Protect from hard frost.

Known as “Hare Bells”, this lovely plant from South Africa has narrow, iris-like foliage and pendulous, lilac-pink, bell flowers borne on thin, thread-like stems. Blooming spring to summer, it grows to 3' tall, and is good near water. Naturally grows in open grassland. Provide full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Zones 8-10.

(Globe Thistle) Spectacular displays of steel-blue, 2 1/2” globes on 4 to 5-foot tall stems, in spring and summer, amid lush deeply-cut silver-green foliage. The flowers may be cut and dried for arrangements. Very hardy. Sun. HP

Growing along coastal areas in northern California and Oregon, this rare, native bulb forms 8" rosettes of attractive deep green leaves with chestnut brown patches. In spring, 6"-8" stems arise, with single, lavender pink blooms. Once established, they easily colonize in partially shaded places. Prefers moist, loamy soil. Hardy zones 6-9. Packets contain 15 seeds.

Also known as "Dinosaur Food", this is a spectacular and architectural addition for a large space in shade to half sun, in cool, mild weather areas. Coarse and leathery leaves are over 6-feet across on 4 to 8-foot stalks. Unusual cone-like spikes of inconspicuous flowers provide additional interst. Likes water! Seeds must be sown immediately for success. HP

A pretty plant that was found along the roadside of Tuscany. Near the road, the plants were 2” tall with 2” flowers on 1” stems; in the garden, the lavender pincushions are 2” across on 3’-6' tall stems, creating a graceful and airy effect (we actually have some that are 8' tall!!). Grow in full sun. Attracts butterflies. Easy. HHP

(NOTE: the plants in the garden, that have seeded in the pathways, where there is heavy foot traffic, grow and bloom just like they were along the road in Italy - full size flowers on tiny, compact plants.)

A classic among poppies, with huge, 8” orange flowers with jet-black markings. Blooms throughout the summer on 36” tall stems, borne above attractive, gray-green foliage. Easy in full sun.

Although this plant from Asia Minor and the Caucasus is considered a biennial, we have had it live for years here at our nursery. The 2-inch beautiful, silken, apricot flowers appear en masse from Spring until frost on 12 to 14-inch stems. The deeply serrated foliage is covered with fine, silver hair - shimmering in the sun. Excellent for the sunny border. Easy. Freely reseeds. Hardy to below Zero. Packets contain far too many seeds for an average-sized garden!

A BUTTERFLY MAGNET!

(Scrophulariaceae) An extremely attractive perennial from South Africa with crowded leaves and dense heads of fragrant, lilac-mauve flowers in spring and summer (and sometimes even longer).

Grow in full sun and well-drained soil. Deserving much more attention, this is one of my favorite garden perennials. Great in large pots and for cutting. To 24". Hardy zones 8-10. Packets contain an avg. of 50 seeds.

Pheasant Grass or Feather Grass

The vivid green & orange foliage and glistening fluffy flower heads make this a standout in the garden! Grows in moist soil in part to full sun. 3-4’. TP

These small, 1-inch, highly-perfumed fruits are sweet and delicious. The distinctive and flavorful fruits come by the hundreds on the 18-inch plants from mid-Spring to hard frost. Excellent for borders in full sun to part shade. Easy to grow and freely reseeds. Great for kids.

I love it when plants are named like this - it's the "Hooked Hook Sedge" - an attractive and colorful plant that loves the shade! With very pretty, bronze-orange foliage, it forms tight, compact clumps. In the summer, the arching stems of dark flowers are followed by sharply hooked and ornamental seedpods. To 14". Hardy.
