It has been said that, “If you want to create a garden for a year, then fill the borders with flowers. But if you want to create a garden for a lifetime, then plant it with trees and shrubs”. This statement is so true, as trees and shrubs add another dimension to a garden. They control and dominate a garden, no matter how large or small the garden is, with a permanent framework or foundation.
Trees and shrubs are among the most important plants in a garden, yet some gardens may have only enough space for one. So, when choosing trees and shrubs, consider the spaces in which they are to be planted, and the overall effect that you are desiring. Are you looking for a dramatic focal point, or a street tree for growing under wires? Perhaps you’re wanting to plant an entire grove, a simple row for privacy or windbreak, or flanking an entry. Some are ideally suited for wildlife, offering shelter and food to birds and small animals, while others are good for controlling erosion and pollution, and offering “white noise” to cover up other sounds (Eucalyptus are great for this). Many trees and shrubs even offer four seasons of interest. Whatever the desired look or function, plan well ahead of time and you'll be greatly rewarded.
